A GOLD Coast McDonald’s has banned schoolchildren from the store in school hours in what appears to be a stand against the ‘Big Slack’ - wagging.
McDonald’s at Elanora on the southern Glitter Strip has posted prominent signs saying ‘any student in school uniform will not be served between the hours of 9am-3pm’.
The signs say the ban is at the request of schools.
Neither Maccas nor local school principals would comment on the ban when contacted by Glitter Strip Bare.
But schools in the Elanora/Palm Beach area do have student attendance rates up to 2 per cent lower than the latest state average of 91.5 per cent.
An Education Department spokesman said all schools throughout the state were focusing on ways to improve student attendance rates and educational outcomes.
“It is important for students to attend school every day to make the most of their education and parents have a legal responsibility to send their children to school,” the spokesman said.
“While schools may be supportive of efforts made by the community and local business to discourage students in uniform from being served during school time, this is not an indicator that those schools have higher rates of truancy than others.”
SIREN’S LEGAL DRAMA
A FORMER Hollywood screen siren turned Gold Coast resident and her ex-lover and business partner have narrowly avoided another court showdown after making one truce in their bitter falling out.
Elaine Hollingsworth is an 89-year-old St Louis-born actress who starred under her stage name Sara Shane alongside the likes of screen legends Clarke Gable and Sean Connery in a string of films and TV shows in the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s.
Last year,The Courier-Mail revealed she and her ex-business and romantic partner, 74-year-old Chicago native Ronald Bradley, were locked in an acrimonious Supreme Court stoush over her fortune, including 20kgs of gold bullion and cash held in a Swiss bank account.
The couple were partners in the Hippocrates Health Centre at Mudgeeraba but now live on opposite sides of the acreage property.
Ms Hollingsworth recently filed an application for a peace and good behaviour order against Mr Bradley which was set down for a hearing in Southport Magistrates Court last week.
However, neither of the parties turned up and the application was dismissed.
Mr Bradley later told The Courier-Mail the matter had been resolved but refused to elaborate.
During the Supreme Court battle, Ms Hollingsworth alleged Mr Bradlley “embarked on a path” to “steal” and “surreptitiously deal” with assets held by her charitable foundation and accused him of fraud and forgery.
He denied the claims, saying Ms Hollingsworth was “bedridden and mentally incapable of conducting a business”.
That case was adjourned with the warring parties agreeing not to sell the Mudgeeraba property. Mr Bradley has also agreed not to sell 10.5kg of gold without Ms Hollingsworth’s consent.
Ms Hollingsworth made her last film appearance in 1959’s Tarzan of the Jungle before starring in TV shows including legal drama series Perry Mason and going on to become an alternative health crusader.
BILLIONAIRE BOB’S JOB FOR LNP MAN
HIGH-profile Gold Coast LNP figure Richard Towson has left his post at the Gold Coast Turf Club to link with billionaire businessman Bob Ell.
Mr Towson, who was beaten in a preselection ballot for a tilt at the newly-created State seat of Bonney by Stuart Robert’s press secretary, Sam O’Connor, had worked in a number of roles at the turf club over the past five years, including a stint as acting CEO.
Most recently he was the venue’s chief operating officer.
However, he has now linked with Mr Ell, whose group Leda Holdings is behind planned development projects in the region worth more than $1 billion.
Mr Towson remains vice chairman of the Gold Coast regional branch of the LNP.
