The family of a young man who tragically drowned acting out a dare at a Gold Coast golf club have told of being “rocked to the core” by the 23-year-old’s shock death.

Nicholas Hunter drowned after becoming fatigued while swimming back to shore from a water fountain at Emerald Lakes Golf Club about 9.30pm on Sunday.

Despite the best efforts of emergency paramedics, he could not be revived.

His father Graeme Hunter paid tribute to the young man who “shone a bright light in his brief time with us and is now shining his light on his mother and brother to try and guide us through this mess”.

“Life has changed forever and I’ll never get to sit on the couch for hours after tea watching movies or just talking about sport, girls, Seinfeld and everything in between,” he wrote in a Facebook tribute.

“This has rocked our small but tight family to its core and I also feel for friends and other family that are feeling this loss along with us.

“Rest In Peace Nick , until we meet again.”

Raised in north Queensland and a graduate of Trinity Bay State High School, the keen sportsman was remembered by friends for his “goofy smile and happy character”.

“An absolute legend,” wrote one friend.

“The world is less bright without him.”

It is understood he was drinking with friends at the golf club when it was suggested he swim out to a fountain in the middle of the lake.

He made it to the fountain but grew tired on the swim back and disappeared beneath the surface.

An investigation into his death is continuing with police to prepare a report for the coroner.
