A STUDENT at John Paul College in Daisy Hill, south of Brisbane, has been confirmed to have COVID-19.

The school, which caters to boarders as well as primary and secondary-age children, confirmed in a letter to parents that a secondary student had contracted the virus.

Principal Karen Spiller said the school was preparing for lessons to be delivered online for students at home, starting on Monday.

However, she said children of workers in essential services can still attend the college where they will log on to the online platform under supervision.

“We have been advised by the Metro South Public Health Unit that a secondary student from John Paul College has been diagnosed with COVID-19,” Mrs Spiller said in a letter to parents.

“This student has been assessed by Metro South Public Health Unit and the advice of Queensland Health is ‘This person did not attend the school whilst unwell or infectious’ and ‘No further actions required for the school community in relation to this person with confirmed COVID-19 at this time’.”

The school confirmed Friday would now be a pupil-free day, with online education beginning from Monday, with the exception of children of parents working in essential jobs.

All Queensland school students will have a pupil-free week from Monday so teachers can prepare to teach remotely, Education Minister Grace Grace confirmed today. Essential workers will still be able to send their children to school.
