Brisbane home targeted again just months after terrifying axe, shovel carjacking

Moment thieves busted trying to steal cars (again!)

A man who was threatened with an axe and a shovel in a horrifying alleged carjacking incident in front of his home earlier this year has had his house targeted again.

In June, Angelo Justus was reversing out of his driveway in Bulimba when two people armed with an axe and a shovel and wearing balaclavas approached his car.

The teens who allegedly stole his Audi A3 were later found by police and arrested.

Dr Justus said it took months to recover from the traumatising incident.

Now, he says he has once been again “violated”, with CCTV footage taken overnight purportedly showing a brazen thief attempting to get into Dr Justus’ car before a loud alarm goes off saying “you are under surveillance”.

The would-be thief runs off as soon as the alarm goes off.

“Someone reaching into property, it is violating to you, no matter what - you always go through in your mind, what if the first line of defence - which was the CCTV - wasn’t functioning well,” Dr Justus said.

“For whatever reason, they would be in our house.”

Dr Justus said the alarm which connects to his phone went off just after midnight and that the high-tech security system which he installed after the first incident had helped stop the crime.

But despite the fact the thief didn’t get into his house, Dr Justus said he still wasn’t able to get any sleep.

“So I have to go back to work with very little sleep. Because it happened at midnight and obviously I lost all of my sleep,” he said.

“I probably only got about one hour after the event.”

A Queensland Police spokeswoman confirmed police had received a call about 12.15am about a person loitering in the streets who appeared to be checking car doors.

“Police attended and conducted patrols but were unable to locate anyone matching description,” she said.

Dr Justus said he was concerned it wouldn’t be the last time his home was targeted.

“To be honest with you, we are seeing all these crimes happening and my wife woke up briefly and it felt like we just have to get used to these things and she goes off to sleep and I just waited for the police to come,” he said.

“We decided this time we wouldn’t even tell our little one. Why speak about crime all the time because you know it’s never ending and the nine-year-old should not be predominantly listening to the crime.”

Dr Justus was particularly concerned about how brazen some thieves were becoming.

“Just yesterday, I was watching footage where there’s CCTVs and these guys have been getting into the houses, despite knowing that there is a camera so always there is fearfulness,” he said.
