The home of a man who was threatened with an axe and a shovel in a terrifying carjacking in the driveway has been targeted for a third time in what he says is a “huge setback” to getting over the traumatising incident.
In June 2023, Angelo Justus was approached by two armed people wearing balaclavas as he was reversing out of his Bulimba driveway. They stole his Audi and were later arrested.
In December, more would-be-thieves attempted to break in but ran away as soon as a loud alarm went off.
Overnight, Dr Justus was targeted again, with CCTV revealing what looks like a young offender scoping his car before bolting as soon as they hear “you are under surveillance”.
Police were called and did a patrol but were unable to find the suspect.
Dr Justus said he was disappointed that it had become the norm to get broken into and said authorities needed to stop relying on statistics to tell the youth crime story.
“It is terrifying to stay in the same place, wanting to move. But it’s happening, everywhere else,” he said.
“There is no option but to stay where you are and expect these things to happen all the time. So it is frightening, but you have to get on with your life as well.”
Dr Justus said it was a huge setback.
“You reminisce about everything that has happened, and you start thinking about – is it going to be worse next time? When is it going to happen again? Because we know it’s going to happen again,” he said. “When is it going to happen? Is it going to be worse than this? Will we be targeted? Because those are the things that you think about. But that’s the norm, that is the reality at this stage.”
Since the first incident Dr Justus has ramped up his security and is thankful that he has a deterrent effect in place now.
But he said something needs to change.
“We do hear things like, the statistics show that it’s not a crisis. The only statistics that we need to look at is, is the community safe? Are these criminals facing any consequences? How many kids don’t face any consequences? These are the more important statistics,” he said.
“I don’t think statistics show that the community is any safer or that law abiding citizens are any safer
“It is just crazy that we are unable to get on top of this and it clearly shows that there is lack of competence in dealing with this.”
