Police have launched a probe after two young men were reportedly threatened at knifepoint when they tried to thwart a break-in on the Queensland-New South Wales border overnight.

About 10pm on Thursday, two people entered the North Point Ave, Kingscliff home and allegedly stole a wallet and mobile phone before leaving in a blue Haval SUV.

Neighbouring residents followed the vehicle into Queensland. It’s believed the car had stolen number plates attached, a NSW Police spokesman said.

Tweed/Byron Police District officers were notified and launched an investigation.

In the wake of the incident, Ngakimiora Treanor took to Facebook to warn others and said her sons were threatened at knifepoint during the robbery.

“If you live in North Point Ave Kingscliff LOCK EVERYTHING,” she wrote on Facebook on Friday morning.

“Thieves broke into our neighbours house last night and our sons caught them. There was an altercation and one of the two thieves pulled out a knife.

“It was 9.30pm & residents in both houses were up. Be vigilant about security, double check you’ve locked everything especially cars. Take note of strange cars in the street.”

Ms Treanor said “one guy had a mullet and was caucasian, around 15 to 17 years old”.

“The other two had masks or balaclavas,” she wrote.

“They were fit and strong and our son who is super fit and a runner couldn’t catch them on foot.”

When approached, a NSW Police spokesman said a door may have been left unlocked and he reminded residents to do their part to deter crooks.

The spokesman did not comment on the reported knife threat.
