Rodney Stephen Rose charged with murder after alleged Ballina assault

A murder accused, extradited from Far North Queensland, and a woman charged with being an accessory have faced court after a man died on the NSW Far North Coast.

Two people charged in relation to an alleged Ballina murder have faced court.

Rodney Stephen Rose, 50, was arrested in Cairns on Friday before being extradited to NSW for his charge of murder to be mentioned in Byron Bay Local Court on Tuesday.

Police will allege Mr Rose fatally assaulted 54-year-old Steven Ponton in Ballina earlier this month.

They will allege Mr Ponton was attacked inside a unit on Tamar Street before leaving the home and losing consciousness.

Paramedics were called to nearby Holden Lane where he wound found unconscious, with serious head injuries, about 5pm on Saturday, February 5.

He was taken to Lismore Base Hospital in a critical condition and died the next day.

Detectives arrested Mr Rose with the help of Queensland Police on Friday.

He was extradited to NSW before being taken to Tweed Heads Police Station on Monday and charged with murder.

Police have meanwhile charged Michelle McLennan, 44, with accessory after the fact to murder and contravening a domestic apprehended violence order.

Ms McLennan was arrested when police raided a Ballina home about 9.35pm on Monday.

Both of the accused appeared before Byron Bay Local Court by video link from custody on Tuesday.

Neither of them applied to be released on bail and they lodged no formal pleas to the charges against them.

Magistrate Karen Stafford ordered a brief of evidence to be served for each accused.

The case will next go before the court in Ballina on April 21.
