The score was one of the highest out of any surfer on the first day of the tournament with the Kingscliffe native preparing to face-off against tough opponents Billy Stairmand, Nathan Cook and Jay Brown.

The youngster, aged 15, was dealing with extremely tough conditions with winds proving a challenge but he looked confident with the board under his feet.

In the round of 64 he will be joined by Cabarita’s Kyan Falvey who nailed some critical sections.

The judges made the 17-year old work for it but he snuck into second place in the heat with a score of 8.46.

He came in second behind the experienced surfer Max Kearney.

One year ago Falvey was finishing fourth in the NSW u16 boys division and is now into the round of 64 against Xavier Huxtable, Lennox Chell and Alister Reginato.

Yamba’s Oscar Berry had a great result but wasn’t a shoo-in to make the next round.

He struggled with poor results in a slower heat and was in front against his three opponents by the skin of his teeth.

Despite the difficulties he topped the group with a score of 9.60.

“It’s always good to get a progression it wasn’t pretty but we got it done,” he said after his victory in the round of 96.

“I was just trying to find any wave, I think I was rattled for a bit and I kept getting twos and maybe a low three but I identified those small ones, tagged it and reset.”

The three will head into the round of 64 which starts on Tuesday while the women’s heats are set to begin soon after it was delayed.
