Truck driver charged following fatal Wollongong crash

A truck driver has been charged following a horror crash in the Illawarra, which killed a 43-year-old man.

A truck driver has been charged following a horror crash which took the life of 43-year-old man in the Illawarra area last month.

About 1.50pm on Friday, February 16, emergency services were called to Lawrence Hargrave Dr, Thirroul - outside Wollongong - following reports a Hino truck and a BMW SUV had been involved in a collision.

Two male passengers in the truck were ejected, with a 43-year-old man dying at the scene, while a 40-year-old man was treated by paramedics before being flown to Liverpool Hospital where he remains.

The truck driver, a 39-year-old man, was also treated at the scene and flown to Westmead Hospital where he underwent surgery before being released.

The driver of the BMW, a 40-year-old woman, was freed from her car by NSW Fire and Rescue before she was flown to St George Hospital, where she remains.

Officers attached to Wollongong Police District established a crime scene which was forensically examined by specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit.

Following mechanical examination of the truck, crash investigators visited a Colyton home on Tuesday, March 12 and arrested the 39-year-old truck driver.

He was taken to Penrith Police Station and charged with dangerous driving occasioning death - drive manner dangerous, two counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm - drive manner dangerous, negligent driving occasioning death and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.

The truck driver was granted conditional bail and will appear in the Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday, June 4.
