5@5: Sydney’s cocaine problem revealed

A batch of killer cocaine has been linked to the deaths of a well known social media personality and a 43-year-old woman, with health authorities warning Sydneysiders of drugs being cut with heroin and other deadly opioids.

Dunka Raymond Caldwell – known on TikTok and Instagram as ‘Humdinger’ – and Angel Mounce-Stephens, who also goes by the name Angela Yazgan, both died on August 30, after overdosing on heroin they believed to be cocaine.

Mr Caldwell was found at a home in Glebe in the very early hours of August 30, while Ms Mounce-Stephens was found at a home in Newtown around 8.45am.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident under Strike Force Chatton, after NSW Health authorities warned the deaths were linked to heroin overdoses.

“Police are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of their deaths,” a NSW Police spokesman said.

“As investigations continue, anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.”

Ms Mounce-Stephens, 43, was farewelled at a funeral at Rookwood Cemetery last week, following her shock passing.

It’s understood she had previous struggles with substance abuse, having been convicted of drug supply and possession in the past and ordered to undertake rehabilitation.

Mr Caldwell’s death shocked the online world and the Glebe community, with the 30-year-old a well-known figure in the Glebe community.

With almost 60,000 followers on social media, tributes for the young father flooded social media.

“You are loved and missed,” one person wrote.

“I can’t believe this has happened, we woke up to this news, how do you wrap your head around it.”

Mr Caldwell was the uncle of South Sydney Rabbitohs star Tyrone Munro, with the team wearing black armbands in honour of the 30-year-old, and Munro’s mother who had also recently passed in unrelated circumstances, in their clash against Penrith on August 30.

NSW Health has confirmed that on top of the deaths, two other people have been hospitalised for overdosing on heroin which was also thought to be cocaine.

The state’s Chief Addiction Medicine Specialist, Dr Hester Wilson said a heroin overdose “could quickly result from a single line”.

“It is important that people recognise the signs of an opioid overdose early and know how to respond,” she said.

“Opioids such as heroin can cause pinpoint pupils, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, slowed breathing/snoring and skin turning blue/grey and can be life-threatening.

“One of the dangers of illicit drug supply is the strength and contents of the substance you are getting is unknown and can be inconsistent.

“Heroin and other opioids can be sold as or found in cocaine, methamphetamine, and MDMA (ecstasy). You cannot always tell the difference between these drugs by appearance.

“In light of this detection, people who use drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamine, MDMA or opioids should carry naloxone.”

Naloxone is a lifesaving medication that reverses the effects of opioids. It does not require a prescription and is free for anyone at risk of opioid overdose in NSW.

The tragic deaths of Ms Mounce-Stephens and Mr Caldwell follow the deaths of four people at a Melbourne home in June.

A synthetic opioid was found in the bodies of a 17-year-old boy, two men aged 32 and 37, and a 42-year-old woman, after they were discovered at a property in Broadmeadows, in Melbourne’s north, in the early hours of 25 June.
