Moss Vale Rd: Landslip ridden Nowra road to be fixed after two year wait

A road connecting a regional town to a popular tourist destination on the NSW south coast forced to partially close for nearly two years following landslides is finally set to reopen following long awaited multimillion-dollar repairs.

Moss Vale Rd – which connects Nowra to popular tourist destination Kangaroo Valley – was forced to close one lane in 2022, following extreme rainfall resulting in landslides on the road.

The road has remained open, operating with one lane since then, with traffic lights running at 30 minute intervals for each direction.

As a result, intense traffic build up and travel delays has been the way of the land for nearly two years, however the needed repairs are now set to finally take place by way of a $5m federal government grant through Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

Gilmore MP Fiona Phillips said the major works would begin in April, restoring full access to traffic on Moss Vale Rd at Cambewarra Mountain.

“I know this will come as a huge relief to locals living on Cambewarra Mountain, in Kangaroo Valley, nearby villages and our wider region,” she said.

The delay in fixing the road was a result of the nature of the landslides and the investigation needing to take place to ensure repairs could be completed properly and needing the correct amount of funding.

In a statement from the office of the Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison, a spokesman said “the terrain and landslip damage posed unique challenges and risks during the planning process, which Transport for NSW will continue to navigate as work is carried out”.

Specialist contractors The Rix Group and Retaining Specialists have been appointed to complete repairs to landslip damage caused by record-breaking rainfall in 2022, with work expected to start on April 2, weather permitting.

Mrs Phillips recognised the road’s partial closure made life difficult for residents of Kangaroo Valley and Nowra.

“The landslip damage from record rainfall has proved extremely difficult for all concerned,” she said.

Residents from the Nowra region complained about the current Moss Vale Rd conditions, saying it adds “precious time” to their trips.

Fixes to the landslip are set to begin next month.

“Every time we go that way we have to wait, it’s been like that for ages. Doesn’t seem to be getting any better,” resident Martin Harrington said on social media.

“It’s getting annoying going through and waiting at that road, especially with the heat,” resident Benjamin Philip also said on social media.

Mrs Aitchison’s spokesman said for the safety of motorists and workers, Moss Vale Rd would be closed to traffic while work is carried out at night between 7pm and 5am Sunday to Thursday.
