A 12-year-old boy who allegedly stabbed a man to death in the state’s far west has not been charged while police seek advice about his mental health.
Just after 11.50pm last Thursday emergency services were called to a home on Duff St in Broken Hill following reports of a concern for welfare.
Officers from the Barrier Police District arrived to find a 36-year-old man suffering stab wounds.
Paramedics from NSW Ambulance provided treatment, but the man could not be revived and died at the scene.
A crime scene was established and detectives from the Barrier Police District, assisted by the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, launched a full investigation into the incident under Strike Force Cardup.
In a statement, NSW Police confirmed a 12-year-old boy was assisting with inquiries into the circumstances leading up to the man’s death.
No charges have been laid at this stage and police said legal advice will be sought in relation to the matter.
The exact details surrounding the incident remain unclear, and police have not released further information about the relationship between the deceased and the child or the events leading up to the stabbing.
Police are urging anyone with information that may assist detectives to come forward as investigations continue.
