The General Manager at Novotel and Mercure Darwin Airport Chris Chaffe has taken over the reins of the Darwin Turf Club as its new chief executive officer.
Before becoming the general manager of Darwin Airport resorts Mr Chaffe was AccorHotels General Manager Kakadu Tourism at the iconic Kakadu Crocodile hotel.
He has also had a stellar career in business development.
Darwin Turf Club chairman Craig Tresize said the board are excited to have Mr Chaffe as its CEO Darwin Racing.
“Chris is a recognised hospitality leader known for building high performance teams, driving strong financial results and delivering outstanding guest experiences,: Mr Tresize said.
“He has a strong desire to strengthen the role the horse racing industry contributes to Darwin tourism and liveability.
“His experience in building partnerships and a healthy respect for the integrity of Darwin racing is critical to building the future with our partners Thoroughbred Racing NT.”
Mr Tresize said the board’s appointment also recognises Mr Chaffe’s business acumen and first-hand experience in member based organisations that will ensure Darwin Turf Club and Silks Darwin have financial and participation growth for members, stakeholders and racegoers alike.
Mr Chaffe plays an active role in tourism as the treasurer of peak body Tourism Top End.
“I am passionate about promoting Darwin and the Northern Territory as a must-visit destination,” Mr Chaffe.
“The Darwin Turf and the Darwin Cup carnival are iconic destinations.
“I’m committed to enhancing that visitor experience, supporting local businesses and driving sustainable growth for the Darwin Turf Club and racing.
“I look forward to bringing my leadership and hotelier skills to a new industry.
“The Darwin Turf Club has magnificent facilities, it is a magnificent venue and I want to showcase them to our community and maximise their use.”
Mr Tresize said the Darwin Turf Club board extends its thanks to outgoing CEO Grant Dewsbury for the professionalism, stability and financial integrity that he bough to Darwin Racing and its licensed club Silks Darwin.
“Grant joined the Darwin Turf Club in 2021 as its chief financial officer and took on the role of CEO in July 22 and we thank him for all he has done,” Mr Tresize said.
