BEACHGOERS are being reminded to be careful of material containing asbestos after chunks were found on the sand at a popular area
BEACHGOERS at Nightcliff and Rapid Creek are being reminded to be careful of material containing asbestos after chunks were found on the sand.
The asbestos material is a historical legacy after material was dumped and buried in the cliffs during World War II and after Cyclone Tracy.

Erosion of the foreshore has resulted in the material becoming exposed and ending up on the beach.
An Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Department spokesman said the department was managing the material by conducting periodic emu picks as well as erecting signage.

“The next emu pick is being arranged and is due to be completed over the month of April 2021,” the spokesman said.
He urged anyone who found material containing asbestos not to touch it.
