A development application has been lodged to build a new Hungry Jacks in Berrimah to complement the Northcrest residential development.

With a new Stuart Highway-fronted McDonalds opened in December, fast food franchise Hungry Jacks wants a piece of the action in the emerging residential precinct.

Darwin-developer DCOH is currently constructing 200 housing lots at Northcrest, with an additional 1000 blocks also in the development mix.

The application site is about 10.5 kilometres east of Darwin CBD and about 7 kilometres northwest of Palmerston. Entry will be via Julius Street and it will be built adjacent to the existing McDonalds restaurant.

As well as the eatery, the Hungry Jacks will include a drive-through entry with diverging entry lanes for 13 vehicles, a 15 bay carpark, loading bay, pedestrian and cycling infrastructure and landscaping.

The application makes clear a nearby World War Two heritage site will not be impacted by the new restaurant.

A World War Two RAAF operations site room is being incorporated into the Northcrest development but the development application makes clear the building will not inhibit the heritage spot.

The nearest residential development is about 80 metres from the edge of the proposal, with design and landscaping bringing further separation between people and patties.

The proposal will not impact on the ability of a neighbourhood activity centre to provide mixed use development of up to six storeys, neither would it limit opportunities for architectural exploration.

The development is anticipated to have negligible impacts on the surrounding road network.

The development would “contribute to the commercial offering which will become available as Northcrest is developed in accordance with the Berrimah North Planning Principles and Area Plan”.

“The proposed fast food outlet will provide variety and interest at the street level through landscaping and an articulated built form,” it said.

“The design allows for passive surveillance of the car parking area. The scale and character of the proposed development is considered appropriate to the service function of the locality.”

If approved, it will be the sixth Hungry Jacks restaurant operating in the Northern Territory up against 10 McDonald’s restaurants. The project will be on display until June 6.
