Territory Response Group officers have teamed with uniformed police to arrest a man following an hour-long siege in Parap on Monday.
Police blocked either end of Drysdale Street mid-afternoon to carry out the arrest, parking the police armoured rescued vehicle - also known as the BearCat - in front of the flat while the tried to arrest the man.
A number of officers assembled in front of the man’s Territory Housing apartment as they tried to persuade him to leave the building.
Willhelmina Papajua was in the flat when the siege began but said police allowed her to leave because she wasn’t a suspect in the investigation.
She said she was visiting to give the man money to buy her alcohol and was not aware if the man was armed.
At about 3.25am the man gave himself up to police, allegedly saying the words “I want to go quietly” as he was escorted to the back of a police van.
The NT News understands the arrested man is known to police, and was scheduled to appear in Darwin Local Court earlier this year.
Police posted on social media earlier on Monday afternoon that they were undertaking a public operation in Parap, and urged members of the public to avoid Drysdale Street while police were at the scene.
At 3.10pm, about an hour after the siege began, police posted that Strike Force Lyra were co-ordinating an arrest plan for a known outstanding domestic violence offender, adding no injuries had been reported “at this time”.
At 3.27pm police posted that a male had been taken into custody without incident, with vision filmed by the NT News’ social media reporter Stephanie Hanlon showing the man standing in front of his home with his arms raised moments before the arrest.
