Norlane man Corey Smith threatened to kill woman and daughter

A Norlane man has told a court the “penny has dropped” after threatening to kill his partner and their young child.

Australia's domestic violence crisis

A Norlane man threatened to take away his young daughter and “kill her” before launching a terrifying assault on her mother.

The woman rushed to their daughter’s aid when she saw that Corey Smith put the young child in his car before trying to drive away.

The 27-year-old got out of the car and grabbed the woman by her neck.

He threw her to the ground and spat on her clothes and face before telling her she was a “dog for calling the police”.

Smith then punched the woman in the stomach.

He pleaded guilty to unlawful assault, making a threat to kill and possessing cannabis at the Geelong Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

The court heard Smith also chased the woman and told her he was going to “kill you c**t” and “I’ll put our daughter in the car and kill her too”.

When police arrived, they found the woman had red marks on her neck and a swollen lip.

Officers also found a small vial of cannabis inside the house.

Defence lawyer Jonathan Barrera said Smith had started attending a men’s behavioural change program since the 2020 incident and had been “sinking his teeth” into the program.

“At the age of 27, the penny has dropped. The period of time in the community has been well dedicated to sorting his life out,” he said.

Mr Barrera said there was “science that suggests men’s brains continue to develop well into their 20s” and said Smith’s current offending was evidence of that.

He said while he could not deny the “egregiousness of the offending”, Smith should not receive too harsh of a sentence.

“His family violence history is very narrow,” Mr Barrera said.

Magistrate John Bentley acknowledged Smith had started the men’s behavioural change program.

Smith was placed on a community corrections order. He was ordered was complete the program and undertake mental health and drug rehabilitation treatments.

“He’s not out of the woods. He’s halfway there,” Mr Bentley said.
