Just a week after speed cameras were installed on the motorway, more new cameras have been turned on at busy intersections on the Gold Coast. Here’s where they are

The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

Gold Coast drivers beware, new speed cameras have just been turned on around the city.

Existing red light cameras on the Smith Street Motorway intersection at Kumbari Avenue at Southport and Bermuda St at Christine Corner, Burleigh Waters have both been converted to combined red light and speed cameras.

Motorists will now be nabbed on the double at the busy intersections if they rush through after lights have turned red.

However fines will be issued for all speeding drivers, even on a green or amber traffic light.

The cameras will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating from the Road Policing Command said there were a number of crashes related to speed and running red lights at both locations.

“What we do know is that the resulting crashes are likely to be T-bone crashes, which have a higher potential of causing death or serious injury,” Assistant Commissioner Keating said.

Back in July a Queensland Police Service spokeswoman denied the Smith St Motorway camera had been upgraded to record speeding offences, after motorists observed the camera operating as cars passed through.

The red-light camera was originally installed on the intersection in December 1993.

The red light cameras are not the first on the Gold Coast to be upgraded. Existing red light cameras at Southport Nerang Rd and Currumburra Rd at Ashmore, and the Bermuda St and Rudd St intersection at Broadbeach Waters, were both upgraded last April.

The Gold Coast’s newest speed cameras were switched on yesterday.

It comes just days after police announced new speed cameras for the Pacific Motorway between Mudgeeraba and Varsity Lakes to control speeds in roadworks zones.
