The long tradition of familiar ties among teammates continued at the weekend as another duo joined the generational ranks.
Fourteen-year-old Kingston Casimiro and his grandfather Tony Miller both took to the field in the red and black of Commerce-Pints.
In the Redbacks’ senior men’s C-grade outfit in the DHL, the two were thrilled to play alongside one another.
And while Kingston is pretty new to the sport, his ‘poppa’ has been a stalwart within the club for decades.
“This was Kingston’s first senior game and it was a thrill for the family for him to be able to play with his Poppa,” a spokeperson from the club said.
“Tony is a valued member of Commerce, joining the Club in 1992 becoming a life member in 2006.
“Kingston is in his second year back with hockey after a year off exploring other sports (such as soccer), whereas Tony (has continued to play) and is currently playing in goals for C-grade, but will jump in net if required in B-grade and TPL.”
Kingston is the ‘newest’ among the ranks of the extended Casimiro family’s rich history in Top End hockey.
From Viki (Kingston’s grandmother/ Tony’s wife), to Shana-Ann (Kingston’s mother) and most recently to Niesha (Kingston’s sister and current under-16 Australian Joey’s player) the family is one of many keeping hockey strong.
Hockey NT chief executive Jasson Butcher said the family connections across the hockey community were second to none and celebrated as an integral part of hockey in the Territory. “Hockey’s always been a family sport,” Butcher said.
“It’s not uncommon to see parents playing seniors alongside their kids, and three generations of a family all down at the hockey together across a weekend.
“It’s a special part of what makes hockey in the Territory so unique.”
