Katherine to experience heightened military presence on streets amid ADF training activity

RAAF Base Tindal near Katherine will become the scene of on-the-ground battle scenarios in the coming days.

Katherine residents are being told not to worry as pyrotechnics, blank ammunition and battle noise simulation is set to feature on the outskirts of the Top End town in the coming days as part of a military activity.

From July 5 to July 11, military vehicles and personnel will conduct military training near public roads, airport entries and around RAAF Base Tindal, with simulated firefights and casualty scenarios expected to take place.

Defence confirmed there may be closures or restricted access to Defence roads or establishments throughout the duration of the activity.

Co-ordinated alongside local and Territory agencies, the training is aimed to provide Air Force aviators skills associated with operating the ground component of an air base.

Across the border, RAAF Base Curtin in Western Australia will undergo similar training activities simultaneously.

It is not the first instance in 2024 where the Australian Defence Force (ADF) have taken to the streets in a Top End town to train, with Darwin’s 1st Brigade practising urban battle scenarios around Marrara back in March.

The Air Force said it appreciated the support of Katherine’s residents, who are accustomed to heightened military activity through the flying activities that frequently occurs in the region.
