The City of Darwin has confirmed Casuarina’s new $26.8 million swimming pool is opening this weekend and will be celebrated with a string of family activities, including food trucks and live entertainment.

On Saturday, Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre will open its gates for the first time more than 18 months after it shut for redevelopment.

With the pool project now complete, Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said he was “proud” to open the modern facility.

“We are incredibly proud of the new Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre which is a modern, family-friendly facility for the whole community to enjoy,” he said.

“The centre is a world-class, dynamic community facility specially designed for people of all ages to use and enjoy.”

Joint-funded by City of Darwin, who contributed $19.3 million, and the federal government who contributed $7.5 million, the pool includes eight lanes, a 50-metre pool, a temperature-controlled, six lane 25-metre learn-to-swim pool and a resort style lagoon.

Mr Vatskalis said the facility offered features beyond the water.

“We have specifically designed the centre to ensure it has increased accessibility, including zero-depth access to all pools and equal access to amenities, buildings, playgrounds and open play and recreation areas,” he said.

“If you don’t want to get wet, the centre also has a large, grassed area, 3 x 3 basketball court and a dry play area featuring a unique sensory dome, the first of its kind in the Northern Territory.”

Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King, who will attend the opening, said the federal government was “pleased” to have contributed to the project.

“The Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre is a modern, dynamic community facility specially designed for people of all ages to use and enjoy, and the Albanese government is pleased to have partnered with the City of Darwin to make this a reality,” she said.

“This project is a prime example of how the Albanese government is investing in community infrastructure that boosts local amenity and brings people together.”

Solomon MP Luke Gosling also confirmed his attendance and said the pool’s opening was another election commitment delivered.

“This important piece of community infrastructure will improve liveability in the Northern Suburbs, providing a family-friendly, accessible, super-modern (and fun) aquatic destination for local working families,” he said.

“The new Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre will further encourage Territorians in the Top End to stay active, stay connected with their local community and improve crucial water safety and swimming skills.”

The Family Fun Event will take place on Saturday July 13 and run from 11am until 3pm, offering live entertainment, food trucks, giveaways, fun activities for the kids and a sausage sizzle thanks to Casuarina Storm Swimming Club.
