A new Gold Coast-to-Darwin flight will launch as the city continues its fight to claw back tourists.
Jetstar will operate the seasonal route beginning on June 26, which will run seven days a week, with the planes traversing each leg on alternating days.
The route, which is expected to run between June and October, is being supported by the Northern Territory government’s aviation fund.
Queensland Airports CEO Amelia Evans welcomed the news and said it put another string to the city’s bow.
“We are delighted to welcome Jetstar’s Darwin service to Gold Coast Airport – an important direct connection to the Northern Territory,” she said.
“This new service will enable travellers to enjoy the two destinations more easily, without the need for time-consuming transits.
“Providing more convenient travel options will encourage people to hop on a plane and try out a new city, bringing significant economic and tourism boosts to our local areas.”
It comes just days after rival airline Virgin terminated its Darwin-Adelaide route.
Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully said flights would go on sale in Thursday, with prices starting from $109 one-way.
“This new seasonal service will provide a direct connection between Darwin and the Gold Coast, eliminating the need for people to transit through other cities and making it much easier and affordable for travellers to fly between the Northern Territory and Queensland,” she said.
“Darwin and the Gold Coast are not only amazing cities in their own right but they’re also gateways to spectacular holiday regions – with unique wildlife, stunning scenery and beautiful beaches and swimming spots.”
