This habit had regressed somewhat by the time of Hansen’s charges although he was still a “frequent” user, Mr Lazinski said.

He said the quantity of cocaine, which had a mixed personal and commercial use, was explained as stocking up in bulk in advance of a week-long holiday with friends because it was “cheaper”.

Mr Lazinski said his client had been diagnosed with ADHD and had an “unfortunate upbringing”.

“He’s abstained from cocaine now and accepts it simply can’t be a part of his life,” Mr Lazinski said.

Justice Thomas Bradley said character references showed Hansen was a “conscientious and valued” employee who had been with his current employer for about four years, rising to a supervisory role.

“On the whole you’ve dealt with (your challenges) very successfully,” Justice Bradley said.

He did qualify this, however, by telling the court it was a “very bad start” to go straight from essentially no criminal history to the Supreme Court.

He sentenced Hansen to 18 months’ imprisonment with immediate court-ordered parole.
