Life as a $1200-a-week ice addict

A twice-convicted Brisbane drug trafficker has been jailed after a bizarre spree committed while on parole, probation and subject to a suspended sentence saw him arrested three times in a day and terrorise a young family.

What’s more, Morningside man Harley George Mallett, 31, had been dealing in dangerous drugs, methamphetamine and GHB, again.

Mallett fronted Brisbane Supreme Court on Thursday charged with 13 offences, most seriously five counts of supplying a Schedule 1 drug, committed between February 12 and March 12 last year, all of which he pleaded guilty to.

Other charges included public nuisance, multiple possessions of dangerous and restricted drugs, drug paraphernalia, and property-type offences.

The court heard Mallett’s first offence chronologically was a public nuisance committed in Brisbane CBD on February 12.

Inexplicably, Mallett began hitting a car which contained a man and his young children, before responding to the man’s requests to stop by attempting to punch him through the window.

He was arrested and discovered in possession of a dirty syringe and three tablets of benzodiazepine Clonazepam.

Upon his release, Mallett immediately took himself off to a nearby carpark where he broke into a vehicle and swiped a purse full of credit cards.

He was arrested, charged and released again.

Mallett came to police attention a third time that same day on Wickham Tce, where a search revealed he was in possession of crushed Diazepam tablets.

A month later, March 12, police picked Mallett up in relation to a warrant out for his arrest.

He was found in possession of a vial of gamma butyrolactone and $1505 dirty cash in his wallet.

Analysis of his mobile phone revealed he had supplied ice four times and GHB once in the previous fortnight.

He spent just over a fortnight in custody from April 11 – 27 last year, before he was returned to custody on June 8 this year, where he has remained.

The court heard Mallett was sentenced to four-and-a-half years’ imprisonment on November 22, 2019, suspended after serving 451 days.

Defence counsel Chris Minnery told the court his client was consuming an eight-ball of ice (3.5g) a day at this time, the height of his addiction.

Mr Minnery said Victoria-born Mallett had just become a father and gotten back with his partner, the child’s mother, which was motivating him to get clean.

Justice Helen Bowskill sentenced Mallett to 18 months’ imprisonment and activated the approximately three years’ owing on his previous trafficking sentence.

His parole eligibility was set as of today.
