A woman has risked her own life to save her pet dog from being mauled to death in a terrifying attack at a Gold Coast park.
Neighbouring residents rushed to the aid of Patricia (last name withheld) who was bitten while trying to drag two vicious Staffordshire terriers off her english springer spaniel, Jasmine.
Yesterday, the same staffies were pictured being pampered by a professional pet groomer.
RESIDENT USED CAR AS BATTERING RAM AGAINST VICIOUS DOGS
After unloading her dogs — Jasmine and Maltese Shih tzu called Poppy — for their walk at Sun Valley park, Ashmore, last Thursday, Patricia turned to close the car door when two loose staffies attacked without warning.
“I turned around and they had Jasmine flipped on her back,” Patricia said.
“The male had her by the hind leg and the female was on her head.
“I was terrified. I just started screaming. Jasmine was so afraid.
“I don’t think she made a sound.
“It was horrific. These dogs, it wasn’t a frenzy, it was like ecstasy. They were loving every second of it.”
The dogs tried to drag Jasmine away from the scene, pulling the terrified dog behind her owner’s car.
“The female had a lock on Jasmine’s head. I knew I had to do something or she would be killed.
“I was still screaming for help. I was on top of Jasmine to protect her and I put my hand into the dog’s mouth to make it let go.”
Patricia was bitten on the hand, but refused to let go.
Nearby residents ran to help, one man trying to remove the male dog by the tail before finally reefing it by its hind legs.
Patricia was able to loosen the grip of the female dog as a neighbour hit it across the back with a draught-stopper.
Even after freeing Jasmine, the dogs continued to stalk as Patricia wrapped the dog’s wounds in a scarf to control the bleeding.
“The dogs tried to get into the car and even chased the car as I drove to the vet.”
Jasmine underwent immediate surgery to severe puncture wounds in her hind leg, and bite wounds to her front leg and chest, and her ear was almost ripped off.
She is also severely bruised, cannot stand and must be handfed soft food, Patricia said.
Patricia alleges the dogs have attacked other animals and claimed this was the third attack involving the pair, which regularly escape their yard.
However Police and Council animal control officers could not confirm this, saying only the attack is under investigation.
“We need these animals removed from the suburb,” Patricia said.
“Does it take a child to be mauled to get action?”
