THE Gold Coast Suns face another enormous task to improve a struggling list of players at the end of the 2018 season.
Captain Tom Lynch looks likely to follow many of the club’s previous best out the door and history suggests few elite players are willing to head north to Queensland.
It’s a challenge faced by list manager Craig Cameron who will go into a trade period after his first full season at the Suns.
Lynch’s expected defection will hurt the Suns forward line but the club has more problems than solving the issues in front of goal. There is no point having a gun forward if the ball can’t get there.
They need to bring in more quality midfielders who can play both in and outside while helping guide a young group of players.
Here are five key targets who should be on the radar of the Gold Coast.

Andrew Gaff
Current club: West Coast
Position: Midfield
Age: 26
Games played: 172
Contract situation: Restricted free agent.
Comment: There is a reason why multiple Victorian clubs are following the movements of Andrew Gaff closely. Gaff is one of the most reliable and durable players in the AFL. There is no large history of injury to be wary of and you know exactly what you will get out of Gaff every week, something that can’t be said for many at the Suns. Gaff averages 31 disposals and four clearances a game for the Eagles and the Suns could do with his ball use.
Mitch Wallis
Current club: Western Bulldogs
Position: Midfield
Age: 25
Games played: 117
Contract situation: Restricted free agent
Comment: Another who has experience but also years of football ahead of him. Wallis was out-of-favour under Luke Beveridge before recently coming back into the side to string five straight games together. Wallis, who missed out on the club’s 2017 premiership after suffering a broken leg, would add some more midfield grunt to a Suns midfield needing more quality and depth.
Reece Conca
Current club: Richmond
Position: Midfield
Age: 25
Games played: 100
Contract situation: Unrestricted free agent.
Comment: A sickening ankle injury has cruelled Conca’s season but it shouldn’t turn the Suns off trying to lure him away from the premiership club who boasts two former Gold Coast players in Dion Prestia and Josh Caddy. Conca has 100 games to his name and despite injury hindering his progress in 2016 and 2017, where he missed out pushing his case to be part of the successful grand final side, he has found his touch again this year. Conca can play as both a halfback and defensive midfielder, something that could interest Dew who has based his game style on a defence-first attitude.
Jarrad McVeigh
Current club: Sydney Swans
Position: Defender
Age: 33
Games played: 314
Contract situation: Unrestricted free agent
Comment: An All-Australian and premiership player, McVeigh has already been linked to a move to the Suns once this season. The 33-year-old is said to be retiring at the end of the season but Gold Coast would be wise to convince him to head north where he could help a young group of Suns players. Luke Hodge has played a critical role in helping the growth of the Brisbane Lions this year and McVeigh could play a similar role down the M1. His experience, quality and knowledge would be an asset to a team who could lose hundreds of games of experience if the likes of Matt Rosa, Michael Barlow and Michael Rischitelli leave the club.
Luke Dahlhaus
Current club: Western Bulldogs
Position: Midfield/forward
Age: 25
Games played: 153
Contract situation: Unrestricted free agent.
Comment: A ball winner who should be on the radar of Suns the recruitment team. Dahlhaus has a premiership to his name and has been a regular of the Bulldogs best 22 over the past seven years. He was among a group to be speculated as trade bait at the end of last year, something staunchly denied by the club, but his movements at the end of 2018 will be intriguing to watch.
