Upper Coomera man killed in three-vehicle crash on Waterford Tamborine Rd at Logan

“There was just nothing left of it. It just exploded across the road. He was obviously killed instantly because we were out there within minutes.”

ONE of the people who was first on the scene after a three-vehicle crash killed a Gold Coast man can’t shake the image of the lifeless body under a white sheet.

The woman, who has lived on Waterford Tamborine Rd at Logan Village for two decades, said she heard a “large explosion” followed by two smaller bangs outside her home about 9pm Thursday.

“There was just nothing left of it (the car). It just exploded across the road. He was obviously killed instantly because we were out there within minutes,” the woman said.

Police said it appeared a car travelling south along Waterford Tamborine Rd and another small vehicle travelling in the opposite direction clipped each other.

It is believed the southbound car and a blue Mitsubishi Lancer driven by the 25-year-old Upper Coomera man then collided head-on, police said.

The man died at the scene.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 24-year-old woman, was assessed for minor injuries and taken to hospital.

The driver of the third car, a 51-year-old woman, was also assessed.

The Logan Village resident – who claimed she had seen about three fatal crashes near her home while living in the area – said the victim remained under a white sheet until the early hours of Friday morning.

“All they (police) could do was cover the car. They couldn’t get him out, he was trapped. And they couldn’t remove him because they had to wait for forensics. We just stood out there and I just thought such an emptiness for him.

“I just cannot get that image out of my head, of that young boy sitting there in his own car, deceased by himself under a sheet. I just cannot comprehend it.

“As a mother, I think ‘what if that was mine’ because I’ve got kids that are a little bit older than him.

“There’s just so much carnage on the road these days.”

The woman said she consoled the 24-year-old driver, who was still in her work uniform.

“She was beside herself saying ‘Is he OK? Is he OK?’

“And here we are saying ‘Yeah, don’t worry, he’s OK, he’s got people with him’. We knew he was gone.”

Police appealed for information and dashcam footage leading up to the incident.

The number of lives lost on Queensland roads this year has exceeded the total number of lives lost in 2019, police said.
