Two men are facing serious assault charges over an alleged brawl at a Burleigh bar in which a security guard was slashed with a knife and two police officers injured.
Emergency services were called to TreeTops Tavern, Burleigh Waters just before midnight on Monday to reports of the disturbance.
It’s alleged 25-year-old William Rees Mahe and 41-year-old James Desmond Murphy were being evicted from the venue by a security guard when things turned violent.
Police say one of the men slashed the guard with a knife. A 37-year-old man who witnessed the altercation was also struck across the head and knocked to the ground as he tried to intervene.
He was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital with head injuries.
It’s alleged Mahe also sprayed the responding officers with a fire extinguisher and threw chairs at them.
The Helensvale man was charged with five counts of assault occasioning bodily harm in company and four counts of seriously assaulting police. He appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning to apply for bail. His mother and girlfriend were in the courtroom, sobbing as the 25-year-old was lead into the dock. The court was told Mahe is currently on parole for a separate unrelated matter, however that is expected to be cancelled due to the fresh charges. He was granted bail to reappear in December.
His co-accused James Desmond Murphy has been charged with five counts of assault occasioning bodily harm and two counts of obstructing police. He was remanded in custody during his first appearance and will face Southport Magistrates Court again on Wednesday where he can make an application for bail.
