Police are investigating the suspected murder of a man in a popular park where his body was found with ‘physical wounds’ in a sleeping bag.

POLICE are investigating the suspected murder of a man in a popular park where his body was found with ‘physical wounds’ in a sleeping bag.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad and officers from Tweed Byron Police District are on scene at Jack Evans Boat Harbour Park where the body of a man was discovered at 11am NSW time.

It is being treated as a murder inquiry.

The body, believed to be that of a man in his 50s, was discovered in a sleeping bag by a couple who were out walking their dog.

The man was found with what police have called “physical wounds”.

Police are investigating whether the man was homeless and are scouring through CCTV from the park.

The crime scene is expected to remain in place into the evening.

Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s death and attempting to determine his identity.

The man had personal identification on him and police are attempting to contact next of kin.

Tweed/Byron Detective Chief Inspector Brendon Cullen said their investigation was in the early stages.

DCI Cullen has appealed for witnesses who were in the area from about 4pm on Thursday until this morning to help with their inquiries.

“What might not be apparent to them, might be relevant to us,” he said.
