Old toys, an Arabian Flintlock Musket, rare books and jewellery - the city’s biggest antiques treasure hunt is back on the Gold Coast. Here’s what the experts have got their eye on.

OLD toys, an Arabian Flintlock Musket, rare books and jewellery, furniture and cutlery from the 1800s are just some of the items that will be on offer at the Gold Coast Antique Collectables Fair this weekend.

Collectors and sellers from all over the country will be at the Carrara Stadium from today to trawl through thousands of items that will cost anywhere from 50c to the thousands of dollars.

Sellers were frantically setting up their displays yesterday, wheeling in crates of rare memorabilia.

Antiques appraiser Richard Macdonald has been in the game for about 20 years and believes this event is one of the best on the calendar.

“This is the big annual event for the Gold Coast, collectors would have saved stuff up for this event … there will be amazing things on offer,” Mr Macdonald said.

“There will be some really unusual stuff on offer. I know I save several hundred unusual items and I know most of the other dealers do as well, so you will get stuff here that you won’t see anywhere else, at any other time.

“I’ve got some jewellery on sale from a princess, I’ve got General Cosgrove’s military hat, there’s some unusual old pistols from Australia’s mining history, a lot of military stuff and some very, very unusual jewellery.

“We appraise a lot of stuff and we will buy a lot of stuff as well. I’d encourage anyone who thinks they might have something at home they’re unsure about to bring it down and we’ll take a look at it.”

Brielle Hazard, 8, helped her family set up some of her grandpa’s antique books for sale. And if she makes any money, she’d like to buy the peddle fire truck.

“Grandpa has broken his arm, so I’m here to help set-up.

“I would like to get that fire truck. I’d wake up my family with that bell on it.”

The event will also be raising money for the Lions Club Big Red Kidney Bus project, a bus with three dialysis chairs and nurses.

“We’re really looking forward to the big three-day fair … it’s for a good cause,” Robina Lions Club member Allan Lawson said.
