Six people pulled from water at Main Beach

Several people have been assessed by paramedics after being pulled from the water at a busy beach, with a number taken to hospital. Here’s what we know so far.

Six people have been pulled from the surf at a popular Gold Coast beach after getting caught in a rip.

Emergency services were called to Main Beach, near the Narrowneck tower, at 3.40pm Tuesday.

Three people were taken to hospital in stable condition after the mass rescue while another three left before paramedics arrived.

Queensland Ambulance Service supervisor Andrew McClelland said the three people taken to hospital were two men aged 37 and 44 and a 14-year-old girl.

“When QAS arrived no CPR was performed,” he said.

“They are all walking and talking.”

He said the three were all from the same family but was not sure if they were from the Gold Coast.

“Surf conditions today aren’t favourable – there was a large rip,” he said.

“They did go in at the flags but apparently they were swept out.”

Sydney-sider Maddison Griffith was on her first day on the Coast when she witnessed the mass rescue.

“It’s very scary,” she said.

“I was on the shore and they were close to the beach.”

She said the surf conditions were rough.

“You could see all the rips like one just rotating out there,” she said.

“Even when I was standing in there you could feel a pull.

“It was very strong.”

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said three patients had taken on water and were being treated at the scene.

All three people are in a stable condition and are expected to be transported to hospital.
