A power outage has plunged thousands of homes and businesses into darkness on the Gold Coast.

An Energex spokesman said the outage was caused by two faults in the power network which it became aware of at about 11.20am on Thursday.

More than 9000 customers were initially impacted. That number fell to just over 2000 by lunchtime.

The spokesman said the cause of the faults was still unknown, but technicians were working to restore power to all affected customers.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews are also responding to a reported power box fire in Southport. It’s unclear whether it’s linked to the blackout.
