THIS is what a million dollars looks like — the light, bright beachside bar and restaurant in these images is the revamped watering hole long-known and loved as the Liar’s Bar.
The Broadbeach Tavern, on the corner of Old Burleigh Road and Victoria Ave, is undergoing a major makeover in three stages.
The first stage, a reconfigured Gaming Room with 45 machines (up from 40) will open on October 5. A new main bar and restaurant to follow a month later.
The third and final stage will see the area currently known as the Beach Bar transformed into a new Sports Bar and TAB to open in December.

Venue manager Adrian Costello said the newly configured area had taken over the tenancy that was previously home to a ‘walk up’ bottle shop.
”We’ve got so much extra space,” he said.
The million-dollar-plus makeover is the latest in a series of major refurbishments rolled out by anchor tenants at the Oasis Shopping Centre since 2015.
“We definitely wanted to maximise our position on the corner,” Mr Costello said.
“It’s great for people and beach watching. Since Kurrawa Surf Club moved it’s opened up our aspect over the park.”
The venue is owned by the giant ALH Group, which operates more than 330 licensed venues, including a number across the Gold Coast and more than 550 retail liquor outlets across Australia.
“We’re very keen to create our own identity for this hotel,” Mr Costello said.
“It’s lighter and brighter. Our goal was to create a spectacular food area.
“Woodfired pizza will be a massive part of the menu. We’ll have baked cheesecakes and baked deserts in the wood-fired oven as well as normal steaks and fresh seafood.”
Staff have been redeployed to other hotels in the group during the build and will return as the stages open, with extra staff also required.
The tavern sits at the eastern end of the Oasis Shopping Centre, which occupies the site that was once home to the five-storey Lennon’s Hotel. It opened on December 17, 1956, before making way for the Oasis in 1989.
NEW BOUTIQUE BAR COMING TO SURFERS
The tavern has become a popular destination for locals and tourists over the years, including US actor Jason Momoa, who visited the bar with his Aquaman castmates including Temuera Morrison while they were filming on the Gold Coast last year.
“It was known as a live entertainment venue and had been for many years but we’re turning around on that with food and dining,” Mr Costello said.
“We will still have live music but it will be duos and soloists — more of a relaxed vibe.
“There won’t be any six-piece bands thrashing out Daryl Braithwaite or Cold Chisel.”
So, if once a Liar’s Bar isn’t always a Liar’s Bar, does the new-look venue have a new name?
“At this stage we’re calling it The Broadbeach,” Mr Costello said.
What does he reckon locals will call it?
“Beautiful,” he said, laughing.
