Smoke was seen coming from a unit on the third floor of the building, a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said.

Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire in the unit by about 2.40am.

It’s understood the building was not extensively damaged, but QFES was not able to provide more information.

The fire has been blamed on a dryer in the unit.

Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics assessed four people at Brighton St and were on standby to assist firefighters if the need arose.

Paramedics took one patient to Gold Coast University Hospital “for further treatment after suffering minor smoke inhalation”, according to a statement.

QFES has previously warned people to regularly clean the lint filter in their dryers, which are a “potential fire hazard” when clogged.

Three fire trucks could be seen parked in front of the building and residents were being ushered onto the street from the tower.

A thin plume of smoke could be seen coming from a unit on an upper level.

The fire was extinguished about 11.35am and firefighters were ventilating the unit at midday.

The cause of the fire was not clear, a QFES spokeswoman said.
