HEARTFELT tributes have flowed and an online fundraiser has been set up following the tragic death of a young Tweed motorbike rider on the M1 at Tugun.
Caleb Saunders suffered critical injuries and died after his motorbike collided with a water truck while travelling northbound on the Pacific Motorway about 6.30am on Wednesday, August 11.
The 25-year-old man, described as a kind, caring and talented mechanical engineer, has been remembered by family and friends, and a GoFundMe funeral fundraiser has been launched.
“Our loveable Caleb Saunders was taken too soon in an unfortunate motorbike accident,” it is stated on the fundraiser page.
“He will live on in our heart and memory forever.
“We hope u can all participate in donating toward his family for a beautiful funeral so we can send him off properly. Any little bit will help us.”
The fundraiser, created two days ago, has raised more than half of its $10,000 goal.
“Piggabeen bids a heartbreaking farewell to local Caleb Saunders, a bright and talented 25 year old from Piggabeen Road,” the Piccabeen Valley – Piggabeen page stated.
“A mechanical engineer who graduated with first class honours, Caleb will be remembered as a kind and caring son, boyfriend, neighbour and mate. Always up for a chat over the fence and forever a hard worker.
“Caleb tragically passed away this week.”
The page offered its “deepest condolences” to Mr Saunders’ family, including his mother and partner.
Jasmine Powell wrote: “The best partner anyone could ask for, the best brother and best son. He loves Piggabeen (in the Tweed) and everyone in it.”
Comments described Mr Saunders as a “beautiful young man” and “beautiful soul”.
“An angel taken way to soon,” one woman wrote.
Another woman said Mr Saunders was: “Kind, caring and hardworking.”
“He had an infectious energy, the kind you couldn’t help but feel happy and smile when you were around him, he will forever be in our hearts,” she said.
The fatal M1 crash was being investigated by the Gold Coast District Forensic Crash Unit, but no charges had been laid by Monday morning.
