Hotel shortage was a media front: Canavan

Back with a bang, Gold Coast hospitality mogul Daniel Ridgeway is set to open his new restaurant’s doors on July 13 – and will even cater to diners’ furry friends.

The venue, Palm Beach Ave (PBA) marks a return for the restaurateur, who lost Bin 72, Gotham Bar and Grill and Rivea Italian Dining venues during the pandemic.

“It’s been a really hard couple of years, we got hit incredibly hard by all this,” Mr Ridgeway said.

“Before Covid we had well over 100 staff, a lot of whom were internationals, so we had significant losses when they had to go home, which was compounded by losing three restaurants.

“It’s so much fun to be able to get back to enjoying what we do now.”

PBA will feature an Australian menu – and a dog menu – and will operate from 7am – late, Wednesday – Sunday, with breakfast and brunch options available.

The special menu for pooches includes bowls of jasmine rice, premium ground beef, boiled carrots and finely shredded steamed vegetables, as well as specially made bone broths.

Mr Ridgway was openly critical of the border blockade between Coolangatta and Tweed Heads during the 2021 lockdowns, a move he said caused customer numbers to plummet at The Strand, and gutted other businesses.

He admitted that with rising case numbers, there was a risk it could happen again.

“I’m not worried though, I can’t live like that anymore,” he said.

“I don’t believe (the government) will lock us down again – there’d have to be something a bit more substantial than what’s happening.

“Positively, people can now get out and enjoy themselves, so I’m not thinking about it. I can’t, I have to move forward.

“We’ve been given the opportunity to trade, so we’re trading. ”
