Mystery surrounds the sudden closure of one of the Gold Coast’s longest-running and most popular restaurants.

Montezuma’s Mexican restaurant at Coolangatta abruptly shut its doors last month, leaving customers shocked and disappointed.

The restaurant was part of the iconic Montezuma’s chain of restaurants established at Burleigh Heads in 1978.

But having survived the long-running Covid-19 border closures which decimated Coolangatta-Tweed Heads businesses, the restaurant recently posted to Facebook that it was ‘temporarily closed until further notice … thanks for your understanding’.

Calls to the restaurant revealed the phone had been disconnected.

Montezuma’s Mexican restaurant at Coolangatta abruptly shut its doors last month.

Patrons have reacted with surprise at the closure.

“Does anyone know why Montezumas in Cooly was closed on Saturday night? Devoted (devastated),” one woman posted to a Facebook community group.

“Please tell me this is temporary!!”

Some patrons weren’t so disappointed.

“Good, it’s terrible, no wonder it closed,” one woman wrote.

“I’ve been a local for 45 years and been there twice, really not that great.”

Some commenters recommended rival Coolangatta Mexican restaurants including the neighbouring Aztec and the long-established The Jungle.

Montezuma’s operates 16 franchises restaurants throughout Queensland, NSW, Victoria and South Australia.

The Courier-Mail has reached out to Montezuma’s parent company for comment.
