A MAN critically injured in a shocking M1 crash when he allegedly self-harmed in the middle of the motorway was armed with “several edged weapons” and had to be tasered, police have revealed.

But the man has made a miraculous recovery in hospital as police investigations continue into the horrific incident involving as many as 12 cars.

The incident happened southbound on the M1 near the Tallebudgera Creek Rd exit about 10.20am on Sunday.

Gold Coast police Superintendent Rhys Wildman said the drama started with reports of a gold Nissan Pathfinder driving dangerously and swerving into other vehicles.

He said the Pathfinder then collided with other cars and came to rest on a verge beside the highway.

Supt Wildman said as witnesses approached the vehicle, they saw the driver “armed with several edged weapons and was inflicting injuries upon himself inside the vehicle”.

“Obviously the occupants of those other vehicles and witnesses backed right away and rang Triple 0 straight away,” he told ABC Gold Coast.

“Police and ambulance were on site within a very short period of time. (It was) a very confronting scene as officers attempted to negotiate with that male, who had suffered quite significant injuries to himself inside the vehicle.

“Advice was provided and police used a tactical solution to taking him into custody, involving a taser, and were able to disarm him.”

Supt Wildman said the man, aged in his 30s, was treated on the scene by paramedics and taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

But he said the man’s condition was now listed as stable, though he may need more surgery.

“He’s very lucky to be alive,” he said.

Supt Wildman praised the public for their actions, saying they did “exactly the right thing” in backing away and calling Triple 0.

He said investigations were continuing and appealed for any witnesses to call Police Link on 131 444.

Queensland Ambulance Service’s High Acuity Response Unit treated the man in his 30s for extensive wounds to his throat. He was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition, where he remains under police guard.

Myf Morton, a witness at the scene, said: “We witnessed this accident. It was truly terrifying.” “He was all over the road (like there weren’t any lanes or other vehicles on the road) and we knew it was a matter of seconds before he had an accident,” she wrote.

“He was off his head on something. I hope those affected by the crash are ok.”

Another woman in her 60s was taken to John Flynn Private Hospital in a stable condition with neck and shoulder pain. She was in a separate vehicle.

All south bound lanes were closed but have since reopened, according to police.

More to come.
