Smith St crash: 21-year-old pedestrian killed in horror accident

The death of a 21-year-old who was hit by a car on the Gold Coast on Friday has been marked by a touching tribute at the scene of the accident.

A dozen colourful boquets and a bottle of Bundaberg ginger beer have been laid in simple tribute to a young man who lost his life in an accident on the Gold Coast.

The 21-year-old died after being hit by a car on Smith St in Southport at about 11.10pm on Friday.

He was hit by the car – a Hyundai Veloster which was travelling westbound – near a pedestrian crossing at the junction with Village Blvd.

It is understood the man, a Southport local, was crossing the road at the time. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Hyundai, also a 21-year-old man, wasn’t physically injured in the incident.

However he was brought by ambulance crews to Gold Coast University Hospital suffering from shock.

Smith St westbound was closed for several hours overnight on Friday as police investigated the cause of the accident.

The Forensic Crash Unit is continuing to investigate the incident and appealed for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.

It was the second fatal accident on the Gold Coast in as many days.

At 5.45pm on Thursday Tallebudgera woman Claudia Galleguillos, 41, was killed when her motorbike hit a Ford Everest on Guineas Creek Rd in Elanora.
