MAYOR Tom Tate is moving to top up his kitty by selling the final part of an investment made 17 years ago at the former Surfers Paradise Bowls Club.
Mr Tate and accountant Barry Pinkstone are chasing a buyer for the bar, restaurant and club area at the base of the Surfers Plaza Resort.
The disused strata-title space, over two levels, overlooks the disused greens and was used by bowls club members and visitors.
The sell-off move comes seven months after it was revealed the Tate-Pinkstone partnership, via company Cresden, had secured a conditional $22m buyer for the 4999sq m site that takes in the greens.
Nine years ago Cresden gained approval for a 56-level tower, Waterglow, on the site and an adjoining parcel.
Cresden paid the debt-burdened bowls club $1.43m in 2006 for the bar-restaurant-club area at Surfers Plaza.
Russell Rollington, of First National Surfers Paradise, yesterday said the 1679sq m space was a blank canvas for a buyer.
“It previously ran as a club, with gaming approval and a liquor licence – both now expired.
“There are many options that can be rolled out for a buyer, subject to council approval.
“They include offices, childcare, a gymnasium, a restaurant, a backpacker hostel or an entertainment venue.”
The freehold 2/70 Remembrance Drive title is being sold by First National Surfers Paradise via expressions of interest, which close on March 28.
Controversial Nobby site back on the market

DANIEL Veitch, a developer with a passion for fishing, has seen a buyer for his controversial The Oxley site at Nobby Beach slip off the hook.
The site, on which Daniel in November aborted plans for a controversial 12-level tower in the face of resident and city council opposition, is back on the market.
It’s being sold without a price-tag and with an earlier Veitch approval in place for a three-level project with shops, office and bars and restaurants.
Swimming champion’s $6.5m deal
SAMANTHA Riley, former swim champion, and ex-ironman hubby Tim Fydler have swum away with a sizeable earn by selling two Rainbow Bay titles into a site amalgamation.
They took control of the 1012 sqm Boundary St holding, home to shops and units, with partner Glenn Forbes for $900,000 in 2016 and have sold it for $6.5 million.
The buyer is developer and Rainbow Bay specialist Paul Gedoun, via his S & S group, and he is building twin towers called Esprit.
Hotel Motel back on market after early drama
THE Advancetown Hotel Motel is back on the market, four years after its owner for 12 years, the Nerang RSL, sold it after a member backlash.
The RSL bought it for $2.35 million in 2005 and in 2017 disgruntled members asked why it was running at a loss and why it was sold for $2.1 million.
This time around the property’s being sold by David and Janine Mills, who at one time owned as pub on Thursday Island.
