THE Burleigh Heads CBD is set to be transformed as it follows Southport’s lead by having a light rail station in its heart.
Community consultation has opened on $600 million plans to extend the light rail from Broadbeach to Burleigh and where its southern station will be built.
The 7km track, revealed by the Bulletin in March, will follow the Gold Coast Highway and terminate near Goodwin Terrace.
COUNCIL SEEKING HAND OUT FOR LIGHT RAIL TO BURLEIGH
Two possible routes will be considered for its final leg, with a station planned for either the Gold Coast Highway or on Park Ave, just metres from the bustling James St business district.
The location of the station, one of seven to be built along the route, will be decided by the consultation which ends on June 23.
No funds have been committed by any level of government but Mayor Tom Tate hopes to begin construction in 2020.
NETWORK THE LIGHT RAIL OR PULL IT OUT
Cr Tate urged the state and federal governments to hop on board, saying it would be a good investment.
“It is a great investment because it will cause an uplift in property values for 800m on both sides of the track which means land values and property taxes. In the long term they get a return on the funds they put in,” he said.
