Fraser Anning: No regrets over egging reaction

CONTROVERSIAL conservative politician Senator Fraser Anning has blamed “leftist” protesters for the cancellation of a Gold Coast event.

Senator Anning, who caused fury with comments about the Christchurch massacre, had planned to speak to supporters on Wednesday night at The Parkwood Tavern.

“Unfortunately we have had the Gold Coast event cancelled due to leftist threats of protests,” a post on the senator’s Facebook Page said.

“With police involvement the venue has been forced to shut down the event.

“We live in a country where the left actively tries to shut down and uses threats against a business for simply having an event held on their premises.”

When contacted a Parkwood Tavern staff member said they were unaware of any threats.

Owners of the Tavern, the ALH Group have also been contacted for comment.

Police not yet confirmed their knowledge of any threats, however were aware of the event.

“As part of the planning for any such event, officers liaised with the venue management and the organisers,” the police spokesman said.

“Any decisions regarding whether to proceed with the event was one for the venue and the organisers to determine.”

A spokesman for Anning’s Conservative National Party said Mr Anning will reschedule the event on the coast in coming weeks.

“Parkwood Tavern weren’t specific in relation to the threats, but they had received a number of calls in relation to the event and there was speak of a number of protesters,” the spokesman said.

“We were asked if we minded on the basis of the threats against the business to hold the event elsewhere.

“It was no slight against them, they are a family oriented business who were just concerned because of the calls and called it off.”

The spokesman said an Adelaide venue set to host Mr Anning Thursday evening had already begun to receive calls from those unhappy the venue would host the controversial politician.

“Businesses receive abuse for holding events in their venue,” the spokesman said.

“We have seen he (Mr Anning) has already been a victim of politically motivated violence.

“The issue is not if people want to protest, it is threats and violence.”

This is not the first time Mr Anning has been the subject of scrutiny by protesters.

Last month Mr Anning had an egg smashed over his head, and he has since had to cancel an event in Brisbane.
