A Robina family food truck has outshone the Gold Coast’s famous fish and chip shops to be named best in the city.

Small Fry owner and head chef Braden Ceccato said he was shocked to find out they were voted the best fish and chip shop by Gold Coast Bulletin readers.

“It wasn’t even on our radar since we were going up against so many great and respected seafood establishments,” he said.

Mr Ceccato said he was inspired by the Sydney Fish Market to open his own interpretation – a food truck in Global Pacific Seafoods’ carpark – just over a year ago.

“We were very lucky to have such an ideal spot to make this dream become a reality,” he said.

Mr Ceccato said the business wouldn’t be afloat if it wasn’t for his dad Robert’s experience in the food industry, his mum Andrea and sister Georgia working behind the scenes.

He said there were three crucial steps in creating a successful serve of fish and chips.

“One, you need to have a light crispy batter. Two, homemade tartare sauce. Three, the freshest possible fish.”

Mr Ceccato said he believed Small Fry’s ever-changing menu also contributed to its win in the hotly contested category.

“Lots of exciting dishes are always being introduced to give our loyal regulars something new and exciting,” he said.

“Our newest addition getting added next weekend is poke nachos using fried wonton wrappers as tortilla chips and sashimi-grade tuna or salmon as the base with heaps of fresh topping.”

Mr Ceccato said he had lots of plans for Small Fry but the main goal was to find a permanent home on the Gold Coast, “preferably between Nobby Beach and Burleigh Heads”.

“You ‘batter’ believe this is only just the beginning,” he said.
