Police breath tested more than 1000 motorists during a major traffic operation on Sunday in Advancetown.
Gold Coast Highway Patrol officers tested 1012 drivers with roadside breath tests and another 22 with roadside drug tests, with one returning a positive drug result.
With this year’s road toll on the Gold Coast doubling the number of deaths for the same time period the year before, officer in charge Senior Sergeant Andrew Frick said police were doing everything they could to stop those figures rising.
“In the Gold Coast police district there have been 16 people who have lost their lives in road crashes so far this year compared with eight for the same time frame last year,” senior sergeant Frick said.
“Drivers need to remember that their decisions count.
“Watch your speed, don’t drive while under the influence, take regular breaks if you’re travelling for long periods and wear your seatbelt.”
Police confirmed 12 motorists were issued infringement notices during Sunday’s operation.
Four people were issued speeding fines including a 25-year-old Carrara man who received a $1780 fine and the loss of eight demerit points after he was allegedly travelling 134 km/h in a 70 km/h zone.
