The Sporting Globe Robina is expanding, taking over space at the Town Centre that was formerly home to the popular El Camino Cantina.

The sports bar co-owner Mark Vigus said as an official venue partner for the Gold Coast Titans, the expansion would provide NRL fans with more pre and post-game entertainment options.

“We’re talking an extra 220 sqm internally, plus the alfresco area which will make for a private function space but also versatile enough to give us the ability to open it up to extend the size of our venue for days we have bigger crowds or major sporting events,” he said.

The 220 sqm equates to more than two thirds of the El Camino space – with the remaining space to be converted into Yo-Chi yoghurt franchise.

In June last year parent company Pacific Concepts confirmed its El Camino venue at Robina Town Centre was closing “due to ongoing reviews of venue performance”.

Mr Vigus who also co-owns Sporting Globe Logan and the soon-to-open Sporting Globe Surfers Paradise with his brother Brad, said the Robina expansion will increase seating capacity by 200 and general capacity by 400 – taking the overall venue capacity to around 800.

“When the Titans are playing at home it increases our capacity in a huge way,” he said.

“We have a free bus to Titans home games, meaning instead of the usual 600 people we take over to the stadium who eat and drink at the venue beforehand, we can take around 900 before and after the game.”

The hospitality honcho said they were “not sparing any expensive” for the build.

“We’re doing this properly – it’s going to be a great private function space, it’s got a bar and toilet in there as well so people won’t need to leave the space,” Mr Vigus said.

The area will boast bi-fold doors so it can be completely closed off for private events or open depending on demand.

“We’re also going to be activating it with great one off events – we’ve ben looking at bottomless brunches, trivia – all those types of things that people really enjoy and something for everyone,” Mr Vigus said.

“Yeah we’re a sportsbar, but we’re so much more than that – we’re a place that anyone can come down to.”

The Robina expansion is due to be finalised by June.

Meanwhile Mr Vigus said the Surfers Paradise venue which is taking over the iconic Hard Rock Cafe building is coming together and “on track” for a June opening.
