A GROUP of people have been rescued after a superyacht travelling to the Gold Coast almost crashed into rocks yesterday.

The yacht was travelling from Sydney to the Gold Coast before suffering a mechanical failure and almost crashing into rocks at Cape Byron about 3pm.

Officers from the Tweed Heads Marine Area Command were contacted and went out to recover the vessel and save people in the dangerous sea conditions.

The vessel was towed to Southport, which was the nearest safe port of entry.

Five people were understood to be on board.

The skipper, a 43-year-old man, and two crew members, a 46-year-old woman and another 43-year-old man, were not injured, but three of them required rescuing from dangerous waters.

The NSW Marine Area Command is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
