Teen Tirade

Wild teens running amok and verbally clashing with a staffer have halted a packed peak-hour Brisbane-to-Gold Coast train, stranding passengers.

The express service from Brisbane came to an unplanned stop near Logan about 6.15pm on Monday as a train staffer confronted three girls who had been yelling and shouting.

The train was cancelled and all passengers were forced to get off at Altandi station and wait for the next train which was also reportedly filled with passengers.

“He asked them to settle down” an anonymous passenger on-board the train told the Bulletin.

“Then they said something like ‘mate it wasn’t us’ and it just escalated from there.”

Footage of the confrontation shows the train driver erupt after he was called a c*** by one of the teenagers.

He grabs the girl and shoves her towards the front of the train as another girl unleashes with an expletive ridden tirade.

A third teen can then be seen walking into view.

A scuffle unfolded in front of a packed train with passengers appearing stunned while others try to ignore it.

“I think he (train driver) let his ego get the better of him,” the anonymous passenger said.

“They were off the rails but he didn’t have to come down and start swearing at them and escalate the situation.”

“He could have just called the police and got them to meet the train at a station.”

But a witness to the build-up before the train driver intervened said he “was just doing his job.”

The train passenger, a marketing executive, said she watched a tirade of verbal and physical abuse on innocent passengers well before the train driver stopped the train and intervened.

“I was shocked and disgusted with what I saw,” she said.

“A group of four girls around 14 were assaulting a young 13-year-old girl and her boyfriend who was the same age.”

The witness said the duo were unknown to the group, which had walked through the carriage multiple times before verbally assaulting the young girl.

“This young, barely teenage couple sitting in front of me were minding their own business,” the witness said.

“One girl from the group started mouthing off every profanity under the sun.”

“This girl was sitting there in shock trying not to make eye contact, her boyfriend was just hugging her trying not to make any eye contact too.”

It was alleged the group left and came back a third time to attack and threaten the young, visibly shaking girl.

“The main perpetrator said she was going to follow the young girl off the train – they were intimidating her looking for trouble,” the witness said. “She was about to walk over so I got up and intervened.”

She told the girl her behaviour was unacceptable.

“Then she went me,” she said. “A kind gentleman got up to support me and repeated everything I said in a calm manner. She then threatened to knife him and started swinging at him making contact.”

The witness pressed the emergency button prompting the train driver to issue a warning over the loud speaker.

“He told the girls to behave or he would have to stop the train – he could obviously hear the girl was being physically violent so he had no choice but to stop the train,” she said.

“He walked down the carriage like he had done this many times, then she arked up and started going for the train driver.

“This was obviously the video captured in the second carriage where people weren’t subject to the tirade of assault taking place in the other carriage along with the fact she punched a gentleman.”

The marketing executive said the group gathered around the door of the initial carriage where they then undid the emergency door locks, enabling them to manually open the train doors.

“They jumped off onto the train tracks and ran away over a junction between Park Road and Altandi station,” she said.

“The train driver said they would get bloody killed if they do that.”

The witness said she was shocked only one other person on the packed train was willing to stand up and call out the “disgusting behaviour”.

“I hope Queensland Rail can see the driver was just doing his job and the previous video did not paint an accurate picture of the events that occurred,” she said.

“I’m also shocked there was no Queensland Police officers at any of the train stations along that journey – there are usually two guards patrolling that service most nights yet this evening there appeared to be none.”

Queensland Police Service have been contacted for comment.

A Queensland Rail spokeswoman said it is investigating an incident involving anti-social behaviour.

“The Passenger Emergency Intercom was activated and train crew responded,” the spokeswoman said.

“Queensland Rail does not wish to prejudice the outcome of the matter by making further comment.”

A spokesman for the Queensland Police Service said it had not received an official complaint and the matter would not be investigated further.

A spokesman added: “We did have Railway Squad officers the train line and train network on Monday evening, with evening officers normally undertaking 3pm to 11pm shifts – however we’re unable to go into exact movements due to it being operational in nature.”
