Calls to ban dogs from Bunnings

A Gold Coast mum has revealed her “hero” son saved his pooch from an attacking dog after he punched, kicked and put the animal in a “headlock”.

Witnesses to the distressing incident said the 13-year-old boy was mauled while trying to defend his dog from two other dogs on Salvia St in Hollywell on Saturday afternoon.

He suffered a deep bite to his arm, while Kirra the dog was taken to animal emergency hospital.

The boy’s mum, Alexandra Bennett, said her son was walking with Kirra on a leash when two off-leash dogs approached them.

She said one dog ran up to Kirra, lunged and started pulling on her.

“Our dog (Kirra) squealed and the other dog joined in,” Ms Bennett said.

The mum said her 13-year-old then stepped in to save Kirra.

“He got the bigger dog into a headlock and tried to punch and kick him off - that’s when he got bitten as well,” she said.

“We’re all just very shaken. It’s a horrible accident.”

In an update on Monday night, Ms Bennett said Kirra had been released from hospital.

She captured the sweet moment the pooch and her son reunited after the attack.

“Kirra is home now. My son was able to come with us to take her home,” the mum shared.

“She was happy to see us and seemed in (really) good spirits.

“She made lots of new friends with her sweet nature.

“Our son is back in hospital for (Monday) night, but feeling much better since he’s been able to see her.”

Several witnesses came to the boy’s aid, including a mother of a newborn child who watched it unfold.

“I was the first there and helped the boy and dog,” the woman named Lauren told the Bulletin.

“It was horrific. I believe the dogs have been taken away now.”

Ms Bennett took to Facebook on Monday morning to thank those who came to their rescue.

“I have no doubt in my mind that it would have been much worse without the courageous intervention of people like Lauren,” Ms Bennett said.

“It was all a bit of a blur so I’m not even sure who was there helping, but it seemed like the whole street and passers-by were there to help. Thank you to everyone that intervened.

“It’s nice to see that the community were there to protect my boy. I’m sure you’re all quite shaken by it as well.”

Ms Bennett said her son would remain in hospital until Tuesday while the “deep” bite to his forearm was treated.

“Our dog, Kirra fared worse but thanks to the vet nurse that was at the scene who urged us to take her straight to animal emergency, she’s in good hands and recovering as well as could be hoped for,” she said.

“She’ll have a bit of a journey ahead of her to heal her physical and no doubt, emotional wounds.”

A Gold Coast City Council spokeswoman said the incident had been reported to the animal management team.

“Two dogs have been seized by council officers while investigations are underway,” the spokeswoman said.

“Once completed, the investigation will determine the series of events and any action to be taken towards the dogs and their owners.”
