The developer of one of the Gold Coast’s biggest shopping centres is planning a $1.5 billion village on the doorstep of its popular complex. SEE THE PLANS

Gold Coast Flashback: Southport Mall

A WATERFRONT ‘village of villages’ with more than 2000 apartments, villas and penthouses and that will be home to more than 4500 people is to be built on the doorstep of Harbour Town at Biggera Waters.

The $1.5 billion Harbour Shores is to be undertaken, subject to a planning green light, on canal-front land on the eastern side of Oxley Drive.

Lewis Land, the pioneering group that developed Harbour Town 23 years ago, says the resort-style project will be a 10-year venture and it hopes to start marketing by mid-year and construction before Christmas.

It plans 30 BDA-designed buildings of from two to 12 levels, tiered from the canal frontage back to Oxley Drive.

The 15.72ha Harbour Shores will have two precincts, separated by water, with the first one to include a one-hectare park and retail and food space.

Lewis Land says the Harbour Shores masterplan has been developed following a design process involving some of Australia’s leading architects and landscape designers.

“The project will cater to a diverse demographic, including couples, families and retirees.

“The design celebrates the 1.5km of canal water frontage, with a public access boardwalk and parkland allowing residents and locals to enjoy the waterways, on foot, canoe or boat.”

Lewis Land Group, founded by the late Bernie Lewis in 1957, says Harbour Shores will continue its 40-year history on the Gold Coast and become its new flagship project.

During that time Lewis Land has developed nearly 2700 lots across eight projects that include the Sovereign Islands and Ephraim Island.

Its Harbour Town Premium Outlets, in which it today retains a 50 per cent stake, was the first outdoor retail centre in Australia and remains the largest.

Matthew McCarron, the Lewis Land CEO, yesterday said Harbour Shores would provide 5000 jobs during its development.

“Lewis Land Group is a proudly Australian-owned, multi-generation family business which has more than 65 years’ experience in property

“The Gold Coast has been a significant part of our story and we are thrilled to still be playing a part in shaping the future of the city.

“Harbour Shores continues our track record of crafting iconic addresses focused on providing residents with a unique Gold Coast lifestyle, such as the Sovereign Islands and Ephraim Island.

“Harbour Shores will be an evolution of these premium developments, combining world-leading architecture and lush landscaping with resort-inspired facilities that capture the beauty of the surrounds.”

Lewis Land says it plans a community consultation over its project, which will target five-star green certification.
