Everything you need to know about giant Coomera, Gold Coast Costco shopping centre

Construction has begun on the Gold Coast’s first Costco, but eager shoppers will have to wait a while. Shopping centre bosses have revealed when the doors will finally open.

Construction has begun on the Gold Coast’s first Costco, but eager shoppers will have a long wait ahead.

The doors of the $75m shopping centre will open “some time” in 2023 as the latest plank of the Coomera Town Centre Precinct.

Civic leaders have welcomed the major economic boost to the suburb, which is one of the fastest-growing in the country.

Sceptre Group director Stewart White said more than 120 full-time jobs would be created during construction, with another 250 employed once the precinct opens.

“This is an exciting milestone in our long-term vision for the Westfield Coomera Town Centre and getting construction started on Costco is another step towards our goal of delivering an unrivalled living destination for the northern Gold Coast,” he said after the first sod was turned on Tuesday.

“Following Westfield Coomera’s completion in 2018, the destination is flourishing and providing essential, social infrastructure for the community.

“We are looking forward to Costco bringing their extensive and valued offer to the community and our customers, complementing the existing mix of retail, services, entertainment, dining and experiences at Westfield Coomera.”

The wholesale warehouse retail precinct will be built on a 14,000sq m site which will also include a 783-space carpark and a petrol station.

It will be the third Costco in southeast Queensland and one of 13 across the country.

The US-based company specialises in bulk buying of a range of goods from household items to food.

Costco Australia managing director Patrick Noone said he was confident the centre would be a success.

It is being built by ADCO Constructions and is the latest in a series of large-scale new projects earmarked for the areal.

Joint venture partners Keylin and Kinstone Group last week lodged plans with the Gold Coast City Council for Foxwell Coomera, a $700m, 400-bed, 60,000sq m state-of-the-art hospital, which will be built as part of a $1.5bn masterplan.

City leaders, including planning boss Cr Cameron Caldwell and Deputy Mayor Donna Gates have long supported the project as a key plank of Coomera’s growth.

“These large-scale developments which we are seeing come to fruition show that Coomera is beginning to reach its potential,” he said.

“It is good news for the whole city when significant activity like this is occurring and Gold Coast has an ever-growing need for health services. “The development of Westfield Coomera, something which we worked hard to attract, has provided key stimulus for the area.”

At last: Construction to begin on new Costco

The giant wholesale complex will be built on a 13,620sq m site on Northern Link Road behind Westfield’s Coomera Town Centre.

The project, which was first proposed in mid-2020, is expected to create 330 full-time and part-time positions through both the construction period and once it opens.

It will come with a 750-bay car park.

The wholesale retail giant, which already has one outlet in north Brisbane and another in Ipswich, secured an agreement with Scentre Group and Queensland Investment Corporation (QIC) to start construction of a warehouse and petrol station complex on the Gold Coast, with the council signing off on the development in December 2021.

It came after the project was hit by significant delays over design concerns which forced the warehouse to be redesigned.

It is the latest in a series of major projects planned for the area, including a $1.5bn health precinct pitched last week by Keylin Group.

City leaders, including planning boss Cr Cameron Caldwell and Deputy Mayor Donna Gates have long supported the project as a key plank of Coomera’s growth.

"These large-scale developments which we are seeing come to fruition show that Coomera is beginning to reach its potential," he said.

"It is good news for the whole city when significant activity like this is occurring and Gold Coast has an ever-growing need for health services.

"The development of Westfield Coomera, something which we worked hard to attract, has provided key stimulus for the area."

WHEN CONSTRUCTION WILL BEGIN ON COSTCO

Construction of a giant Costco on the Gold Coast will begin in 2022 after the highly anticipated shopping centre was given the green light by council.

Council ticked off the Coomera project on Tuesday after resolving outstanding concerns about the project’s design and impact on traffic.

The approval clears the way for work to finally begin on the site more than 18 months after it was first proposed.

Area councillor and Deputy Mayor Donna Gates told the Bulletin she was “delighted” by the decision, which was made under delegated authority.

“It is great to see this project finally approved and all the issues which delayed it getting resolved satisfactorily,” she said.

“It will be great to see the expansion of Costco into the city, because there has been a heap of inquiries from residents, so this is a great Christmas gift for us all.”

Costco filed a development application with the Gold Coast City Council in August 2020 to build a warehouse on a 13,620sq m site at Westfield’s Coomera Town Centre.

The Bulletin revealed this month there had been no progress on the project despite construction being expected to begin in early 2021.

The Bulletin revealed earlier this year that the project had been hit by significant delays over design concerns which forced the project to be redesigned.

The wholesale retail giant, which already has one outlet in north Brisbane and another in Ipswich, last year secured an agreement with Scentre Group and Queensland Investment Corporation (QIC) to start construction of a warehouse and petrol station complex this year. The project is expected to create 330 full-time and part-time positions through both the construction period and once it opens.

It will come with a 750-bay car park.

City planning boss Cr Cameron Caldwell welcomed the approval.

“Over the past decade we have seen the development of the long-awaited Coomera Town Centre precinct,” he said.

“The approval of Costco is a long-awaited piece of the puzzle and this will provide increased retail offerings in a great location.”
